New Yorkers were moved to tears by astonishing images of a double rainbow crossing the city on the 22nd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on Monday. Big Apple resident Meg Wall filmed the colors illuminating the sky from the windows of her Upper East Side apartment following an afternoon storm that hit the megalopolis.
“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Megan Wall captioned her video, which immediately went viral, viewed more than 6.7 million times. In the images, rainbows stretch over midtown Manhattan, with one even appearing to originate from the site of the former World Trade Center. Many – New Yorkers or not – were moved by the astonishing scene, saying it was no coincidence that a double rainbow appeared on September 11.
“The world can be beautiful”
“Two rainbows on 22nd birthday,” one remarked. “Of all places, of all days, this is where they appear,” reacted one Internet user. Other commenters on the video said the rainbows were a sign that 9/11 victims were looking out for their loved ones. “I feel like this is a message to everyone who is still here. The world can be beautiful, even in times of mourning,” one said. “They’re looking out for us,” a second person said. “They hear our cries. It is a promise that heaven is real. It’s beautiful. “, declared yet another.

On Monday morning, politicians, rescue workers and relatives of the deceased gathered at Ground Zero to mark the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The names of the 2,977 men, women and children who died on that dark day were read aloud in what has become an annual tradition. The event also included six moments of silence to recognize the moment each WTC tower was struck and fell, as well as the moment the Pentagon was attacked and the moment hijacked Flight 93 crashed.
