Aston Martin wants to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the brand at home in Silverstone. On this occasion, as part of the accompanying program, we saw 110 historic Aston Martin cars, which were later joined by two formula single-seaters. They were much faster than their predecessors from the touring car series, and according to Fernando Alonso, they were far from showing everything.
The Silverstone stable, whose headquarters are literally just a few hundred meters away from the circuit, started Friday’s program in test mode. In the first training, both pilots were given the task of collecting as much data as possible. Even so, Alonso finished fourth and Stroll ninth.
In the second practice, there was already more grip on the track. The time has come to really rely on the soft mixture as well. Lance Stroll managed to overcome the barrier of 1:29.000 and finished sixth, Fernando Alonso with a loss of almost three tenths to his colleague closed the top ten.
Aston Martin does not have big eyes on its home circuit, as it recognizes that its car excels in the corners, which it lacks in the UK. The slow ones are like saffron here. Even so, he was happy to return to the traditional circuit.
“It was very good. Adrenaline will flood you on this circuit as you sit in an F1 single seater. It’s good to be back. It was very windy today, the conditions were challenging, but I feel good that we are driving at Silverstone again.” he confessed Fernando Alonso.
He immediately revealed how he felt in Silverstone’s fast corners. “I had a good feeling. Of course, we will analyze the data tonight. We tested a few things in training, so we will show a lot more.”
“However, the weather will also play a role. It could rain on Saturday, so everything can change. We have to be ready,” realizes the two-time champion, who could not find an answer to the question of why Williams was so well prepared on Friday, occupying the positions that usually belong to Alonso’s stable. “That’s a question for them.”
Lance Stroll independently of Fernando Alonso, he pointed to the great pace of Williams, who tends to frustrate opponents with his maximum on the straights. “Our car had good speed. We need to work on a few things. Williams seems to be very fast, which is a surprise. We’ll see how it goes on Saturday, maybe the weather will also work.”
The traditionally express and quick conversation with the Canadian rider briefly touched on Stroll’s problems from Friday. We saw that on the straight he had to hold on to his left mirror, which almost flew off.
And besides, he also had one sore. “I’m fine, I just hit a pebble in the middle of the Maggots and Becketts section with my finger. It was quite painful, but it’s OK,” he assured Stroll. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
