Asteroid 3 Times Statue of Liberty Will Pass Near Earth

At that distance, asteroid 2021 NY1 will make a relatively close approach at about 970,000 miles (1,560,000 km) from Earth – or just under four times the distance between Earth and the Moon.

According to NASA’s NEO data, asteroid 2021 NY1 is a rock measuring between about 129 and 300 meters with a diameter of 130 to 300 meters, or the equivalent of three to six Statues of Liberty.

As reported Live Science, the asteroid was hurtling through space at about 21,000 mph (33,800 km/h) or about 27 times the speed of sound.

However, such asteroids would pose no threat to life on Earth.

Asteroid NY1 that will pass is not the closest that has ever passed Earth. Previously, asteroid 2020 QG, which slid just 1,830 miles (2,950 km) over the Indian Ocean on August 16, 2020, held the title of closest asteroid to Earth.

In addition to Asteroid 2021 NY1, there are still three other giant asteroids approaching Earth this September.

According to NASA, an asteroid measuring 137 meters long approached Earth’s orbit on September 10.

Next, there will be 2021 PT passing on September 11. This asteroid is the same size as 2021RE, which is 137 meters. It is expected to pass at a distance of 4.9 million kilometers from Earth.
