Asteroid 2023 NT1: Close Call with Earth and Astronomers’ Discovery Delay

Thursday, 20 July 2023 – 11:10 WIB

LIVE Techno – An asteroid as tall as a 20-storey building sailed close to Earth last week. The space object hurtled past the planet roughly a quarter of the distance between Earth and the Moon and astronomers didn’t notice it until two days later.

Asteroid 2023 NT1 passed 200 feet (60 meters) wide by Earth on July 13, traveling at around 53,000 mph (86,000 km/h), according to NASA (Aviation and Space Administration).

However, because the space rock is flying towards Earth from the direction of the Sun, the glare from the Sun has blinded telescopes to the approach asteroid, so that it can only be seen after passing.

Astronomers didn’t find the building-sized rock until July 15. But then a telescope in South Africa — part of ATLAS, a series of telescopes designed to see asteroids days to weeks before a course.

More than a dozen other telescopes also spotted the rock soon after, according to the International Astronomical Union’s Center for Minor Planets, quoting from the Live Science website, Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Meteor that fell on Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Despite this surprising approach, Asteroid 2023 NT1 is not large enough to be considered a potentially hazardous object after asteroid accumulation over the next decade.
