Asteroid 2023 HO6 was discovered by astronomers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) this year, as the name suggests. The object will fly by the Earth on Wednesday, July 5 at a speed of 7.74 kilometers per second, the portal reported News9Live.
According to experts, it will approach our planet at a distance of about two million kilometers. This is more than five times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
Astronomers estimate that asteroid 2023 HO6 may reach up to 310 meters in diameter. Despite its enormous size, there is no danger of a collision with the Earth and the flyby should be safe for our planet, the portal writes The Jerusalem Post.
Experts classify the object as an Apollo-class asteroid. About 15,000 of them are registered. “Their orbit around the Sun intersects with the orbit of the Earth,” the astronomers explained.
