We heard the new work of the songwriter entitled “Astarti”.
THE “Astarte” is the fourth personal album of the songwriter, performer and guitarist Pavlos Synodinos after “Little Hopes” (2010), “Greeklish Babylon” (2013) and “Status Update” (2018). It is also the best album of a creator who, as the years go by, he remains uncompromising without adding water to his wine. Well, we are talking about a bold artist who takes his own path, lonely perhaps, but at the same time so liberating!
Eight pieces make it up “Astarte” which was just released on CD and vinyl by KΨΜ publications and begins with an atmospheric arrangement of “Ramon” by Thanasis Papakonstantinou. This is followed by “Astarti”, the self-titled track of the record, with music and lyrics by Synodinos, a beautiful and highly radio-friendly progressive rock ballad (in the style of Illusion’s “Isadora” for the more discerning) with the creator’s psychedelic guitar solo. In “Elisabeth”, with lyrics by N. Noukoutos, love can defeat the surrounding individual and collective depression, where in “Coffee bar/ The candy”, also with lyrics by Noukoutos, you think that this is how the Violent Femmes will they arranged “Misirlou” by Roubanis. “Nea Smyrni” is based on a completely experiential verse by Synodinos and is a rhythmic electric ballad with his rapping interpretation. In “Potpouri” with lyrics by Nukutou we have an excellent rock song with camouflaged oriental elements that even flirt with Hawkwind. In the “Overprotective” o Companion he essentially gives a gift to his partner or to all the women of the world with a sensitive look but also with a beautiful orchestral part, as if the sounds and vocals are literally floating in his melody. The album closes with the English-language “Desert ‘n’ salt”, which contains some of the best elements of the record, namely great guitar riffs, an evolving stormy rhythm, but also artificially “buried” vocals.
Another asset of “Astarte” is the compactness of its sound as a whole: there is nothing heavily orchestrated in order to impress the listener. Things are given simply but with a strong rock feeling, essentially products of the chemistry between a trio of musicians, himself Companion in singing and guitars, Alex Randan on drums and Akis Papavasileiou on bass, while the work of the experienced Yiannis Paxevanis certainly played a role in the production and editing of the sound. Look for “Astarti” by Pavlos Synodinos. It is a pure rock record that sounds almost live, although it was recorded in a studio.
