More than two million customers use mobile voice communication services in Latvia, thus exceeding the population of the country, the Latvian Telecommunications Association (LTA) informed.
The association referred to current data from the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), which shows that almost 876,000 customers use Tele2’s mobile services, about 721,000 customers from Latvijas mobilā telefona (LMT) and Bite Latvija – about 473,400 customers.
“According to these data, the number of mobile voice connections in Latvia has reached 2.07 million. This means that Latvia has a large enough population with several connections to isolate work calls from private ones,” LTA concludes.
BEREC’s official data show that, in terms of the number of mobile voice connections (SIM cards), the largest mobile operator in Latvia is Tele2, with a market share of 42.3%. The second largest operator in Latvia is LMT with 34.8% market share, but the third – Bite Latvija with 22.9% market share.
LTA Executive Director Jānis Lelis mentioned that in Latvia there is strong competition in the mobile communications market, with companies fighting for market positions in various sectors of the industry, from which the biggest beneficiaries are definitely mobile users.
“Operators’ success is influenced by the chosen business strategy and approaches to attract customers, as well as the demographic situation and e-skills in the country. The demographic situation in the context of mobile communications is relatively little talked about and discussed, but it is clear that operators will not be able to rely on large new customers. These will definitely be new services and business niches that operators will try to break into, “said Lelis.
BEREC data do not list M2M card connections that allow devices to communicate with each other via the mobile Internet, as well as SIM cards that are intended for data transmission only. M2P connections required for IoT solutions are also not counted.
LTA is a non-political public organization founded in 1998. It brings together hardware manufacturers, public, mobile and CTV operators, Internet service providers. The association also represents Latvia’s specialized telecommunications networks, which in cooperation with Internet service providers and CTV companies create new services and network solutions.
