Two days after the arrest of seven judges under the judicial operation known as the ‘Purge’ casethe Association of Magistrates and Judges (AEMA) of the Ecuador issued a statement in which it requests citizens refrain from making “generalized comments that could tarnish the reputation of judges and magistrates who carry out their duties with integrity”.
The case known as ‘Purge’, which also led to the arrest of the former Christian Social assemblyman Pablo Muenteswas born from the anti-corruption operation ‘Metastasis’ and investigates alleged corruption and links with organized crime within the Ecuadorian State.
According to the AEMA statement, the detained judges represent less than 1% of the judges in the country and their actions “can in no way be attributed indiscriminately to an entire institution.”
One of those arrested in the operation carried out last Monday was Reinaldo Cevallos, who served as president of the Guayas Judicial Association. (I)
