Assisted procreation, in one year over 86,000 couples in Italy underwent assisted fertilization treatments, with approximately 16,625 births

ROMA – According to the most recent data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, in one year over 86,000 couples in Italy underwent assisted fertilization treatments, with approximately 16,625 births, equal to 4.2% of the total births (in Italy more than one one child in 25 was born thanks to PMA within 12 months). A path that is not easy for couples, which also has significant psychological implications. On the occasion of World Mental Health Day (10 October), Alma ResCenter for Reproductive Medicine – wants to remind you of the importance of psychological support for those who decide to resort to Medically Assisted Procreation (PMA).

That whirlwind of pain and disbelief. The discovery of infertility, in fact, often plunges the individual and his relationship into a vortex of pain and disbelief; it is experienced as an imposing rock that stands between one’s mind – which was giving voice and impetus to a strong vital desire – and the temporary impossibility of realizing one’s project. The part of the couple that is the bearer of the infertility problem feels guilty and, therefore, the psychologist’s commitment is aimed at promoting and recovering the couple’s shared language which the sense of guilt risks compromising and wearing down.

The long medical tests. Along the way, many tests are faced, starting with the many medical tests that are requested, the difficulty of finding clear information, the difficulty of talking about it with friends and relatives, the feeling of social isolation that can arise. All this strips the individual of the possibility of feeling like a subject, the prevailing sensation will be that of feeling like a cog inside a gear, thus impoverishing the proactiveness and propulsiveness useful for determining our events”.

The opportunity to be able to share emotions. Being able to share one’s emotions corresponds to facing the negative experiences that besiege the mind, inhibiting a vital function which, instead, is thus reactivated, animating dynamic parts of oneself. Thanks to the experience of the conversations with the psychologist, the couple can once again perceive themselves as protagonists of their own MAP journey and no longer the victim of an unexpected diagnosis.

Psychological support. Aware of the importance of psychological support, Alma Res promises to make available to all couples who undertake a MAP process, free of charge, a psychotherapist who can help alleviate the sense of inadequacy and externalise some amounts of anguish; Furthermore, a dedicated listening space allows you to reduce stress peaks.
