Assistant referee Thorben Siewer, who was hit in the head in the Bundesliga game between VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Köln (1:1), will leave the hospital in Wolfsburg.
The Wolfsburg team confirmed this when asked. A VfL transport service will then take the 36-year-old home. Siewer lives in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The linesman took the ball in the face from close range in the 14th minute of the game on Saturday. During a Wolfsburg attack, Cologne defender Max Finkgräfe shot the ball into touch and unintentionally hit Siewer during this attempt to clear the ball. Siewer was taken to hospital for observation after the game. Referee Sören Storks and his team visited him there that evening.
The Bundesliga referee Christian Dingert said in the Sport1 one-two about Siewer: “According to the circumstances, he is doing well.”
