When the Stuttgarter Kickers meet SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the first round of the DFB Cup, a familiar face in Stuttgart will sit on the bench for the Bundesliga relegated team: ex-VfB assistant coach Rainer Widmayer joins the clover leaves.

Rainer Widmayer is back in business. The former assistant coach of VfB Stuttgart joins SpVgg Greuther Fürth, who have been relegated to the Bundesliga, as Marc Schneider’s assistant coach. Widmayer signed a two-year contract with the Franks. “It’s an attractive task, we want to get young, hungry players on track, develop them further and first of all get the team into the second division,” said Widmayer. The 54-year-old knows the new Fürth head coach from his time in Switzerland. At FC St. Gallen, Schneider was a player under Widmayer for six months when he worked there with Krassimir Balakov.

Respect for the kickers

Widmayer is considered a loyal football expert with a special eye for talent. The former second division player for SSV Ulm 1846 has a lot of experience, including from his time as assistant coach for TSG Hoffenheim, Hertha BSC and Schalke 04. Born in Sindelfingen, he is already looking forward to the DFB Cup first round game at the Stuttgarter Kickers between July 29th and August 1st in the Gazi Stadium on the Waldau: “It will be a tough piece of work for us, because in a game, in this stadium, the Blues will definitely calculate something.”
