– Assessing the Current Situation in Ukraine with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

The Ukrainian counter-offensive did not achieve its goals, and major Russian attacks recently put Ukraine in a critical position. In an interview with ARD, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assesses the situation.

How do you assess the current situation on the front in Ukraine?

Stoltenberg: I am always cautious about making predictions because wars are generally unpredictable. But it is clear that the more we support Ukraine, the faster this war will end,” says the NATO Secretary General in an exclusive interview for the ARD studio in Brussels.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Gen. However, Zaluzhnii spoke of a stalemate. Is it not enough for Putin now to simply wait and count that the Russians have more reserves, and the tide of war can turn in their favor?

Stoltenberg: It’s up to us to prove to Putin that the opposite is true. It should be clear to us that it will be a complete tragedy for Ukraine if Putin wins the war. But that would be dangerous for us too. It is in our common interest to see to it that Ukraine prevails. Yes, there have been no major changes on the fronts in recent months, but we have to look at what the initial positions were. The Ukrainians managed to inflict serious damage on Russia with strikes deep in the rear, delivered by cruise missiles. Airplanes and helicopters were destroyed there, they managed to repel the Russian military fleet in the eastern part of the Black Sea. This means that they are able to keep open the sea route through which grain from Ukraine is transported across the Black Sea. That is, we are talking about great victories, although they did not manage to shift the front lines.

Are you worried that there may be worse news from Ukraine?

Stoltenberg: We must also be prepared for bad news, but we are obliged to support Ukraine in both good and bad times. It is a war of attrition – a battle of efficiency, a battle of logistics. Increasing military output is critical. We are working hard towards this goal. One of the serious problems is the fragmentation of the European arms industry. We are unable to cooperate as closely as would be necessary. The delivery of more military aid and ammunition is critical at this time. In this regard, we have to see the big picture – that it is in the common interest of everyone in NATO to overcome some narrow-minded national interests – they are putting us in a dangerous situation, says Jens Stoltenberg.
