Assault on Asian woman in New York: suspect arrested

A man suspected of beating an Asian woman in New York on Monday by using racist slurs at her was arrested on Wednesday.

The man suspected of punching an Asian woman in New York on Monday was arrested by police early Wednesday morning. The authorities announced that they had arrested the suspect thanks to the report of witnesses who recognized him on the CCTV footage which filmed the attack. While the police did not disclose his identity, the “New York PostSaid it was a 38-year-old Brandon Elliot, a local homeless man living in a hotel serving as a shelter for the homeless. It was there that he was arrested, according to media reports. He was promptly charged with hate assault and attempted hate crime. The authorities have indeed indicated that he had uttered anti-Asian insults against the 65-year-old victim of Filipino origin.

This attack comes in a particularly tense context for the Asian community, victim since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, of a considerable increase in racist acts against it in the United States. The investigation was assigned to the New York Police Hate Crimes Unit. It has recorded a 1300% increase in racist crimes against Asian Americans in the city since the start of the pandemic. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday called the previous day’s attack “horrible” and “disgusting,” saying “violence against the Asian community is unfortunately becoming an epidemic in our state and our country”.

Sentenced for the murder of his mother

In the shocking video, unveiled by police on Monday, the woman can be seen being thrown to the ground before receiving multiple blows to the head, while lying on the ground. The facts occurred in front of a building and several men witnessed this attack, without ever trying to come to help the victim, explains the “New York Post“. Worse yet, the video ends with one of the residence guards closing the door as the assailant walks away and the woman is on the ground. The suspect is actively wanted by the police. The victim suffered from a fractured pelvis and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where her condition was stable, on Tuesday.

The “New York Post” indicates this Wednesday that the arrested man was on parole. He was released in 2019, after being convicted of the 2002 murder of his mother in the Bronx.
