The suspects in the assassination of the Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio come from abroad. The police in the South American country report that they are Colombians.
The six suspected perpetrators arrested come from the criminal environment, Interior Minister Juan Zapata said.
Pistols, grenades and a machine gun were seized, among other things. Zapata spoke of a “political crime with terrorist features” and an attempt to sabotage the upcoming elections.
Villavicencio, a former journalist, was shot three times in the head after an election rally in the capital Quito. A suspect died in an exchange of gunfire with security guards.
President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency for a period of 60 days and mobilized the armed forces. The early elections are on August 20.
