Gold miners blocked access to the labor department this morning to denounce the pressure exerted by the authorities on legal gold panning companies.
From 5 a.m. this morning, angry gold miners obstructed access to work management by dumping earth.
They denounce unequal treatment which, according to them, is reaching alarming proportions. “ Today, there are 10,000 illegal immigrants who have been pillaging Guyana for years. With the price of gold at its highest, it’s not likely to stop », Says Thierry Favaretto, mining operator in Paul-Isnard who deplores increased administrative pressure on legal companies, “ forced to undergo checks up to five times a month. We must be above reproach. For the slightest fault, we are punished or brought to justice, while illegal immigrants freely exploit and devastate », he adds.
The movement was supported by the Federation of Mining Operators of Guyana (FedomG). Its president, José Mariema, declared his solidarity with the demonstrators: “ We have been alerting state services about illegal gold panning and red tape for a long time. Our active gold miners are fewer and fewer: today, between 25 and 30 work, while around sixty, although registered, still cannot practice. »
After a meeting with labor management, the gold miners lifted the blockade, but warned: “ Buried under standards, we will react if nothing changes. »
