For the duration of the exhibition, the former room of Aspazija’s housekeeper Anna Rijniece will turn into an Art Nouveau garden, where a curious cat girl lives. It will not be an ordinary garden, just like a cat child. The mistress of the white coat will symbolize Aspazija as a child – an attentive wise man, who dressed her childhood feelings in the words of one of the most beautiful collections of Latvian poetry – Sunny corner.
Although the collection is popular, Sunny corner never published with full illustrations. This is both an advantage and a challenge. Gundega Muzikante, whose drawing is characterized by love, liveliness and expressive details, admits that Aspazija’s flight of fantasy is elusive: “There radiates warm love and the presence of cosmic infinity. The objects of the exhibition are an attempt to materialize these diverse feelings.”
When creating an exhibition, the aim of which is to introduce children to Aspazija’s poetry in a modern way, the artist, like the poet herself at the time, sought sources of expression in nature. In the glorious curtain, among the various flowers, the children will find both poppies and peas, as well as a modest thistle, the green leaves of which lay on Gundega Muzikante’s desk, so that the drawings would have the right shape.
Exhibition Sunny corner will not be just a visual pleasure. Young visitors to Aspazija’s house will be able to experience a variety of feelings. Sleeping In the star tent children will be able to look at the lights of the sky and listen to Aspazija’s poems spoken by the actress of the New Riga Theater Guna Zariņa. You can watch the life of the underwater world right next to you In the dream pond, but in the flower chairs listen to the dreamy song of Raimonds Pauls with Aspazija’s words The call. Young visitors will also have the opportunity to be active themselves, opening one “miracle box” after another. In them, children will find surprises and exciting tasks. At the board you will also have the opportunity to try your hand at poetry.
Aspazija poetry collection Sunny corner came out in 1910. Immediately after her release, critics recognized it as the poet’s strongest and best-built collection. Even Rainis finally praised his spouse: “Sunny corner came as a gentle comforter in fierce weather, the sun and a dear hand (..). Everyone was surprised by the lovely sunshine. “The first poetry collection Sunny corner edition (4000 copies) was sold out in record time. Prior to the Soviet occupation, the poetry collection underwent five editions, confirming that readers loved it by recording Sunny corner in the collective consciousness of the Latvian people.
Exhibition Sunny corner Aspazija’s house will be open until March 2021.
