Asks tourism to warn tourists: – Can be life threatening

In recent weeks, there have been a number of avalanches around the country.

On Thursday, three French ski tourists died after an avalanche in Lyngen in Troms.

Now the Red Cross is worried, and is asking the tourism industry for help at Easter.

– This is the most avalanche-dangerous palm weekend in many years, says deputy head of the National Council of the Red Cross Auxiliary Corps Jarle Bjørge Øverland in a press release.

Degree of danger 4

Most mountain areas in Norway have a large or significant risk of avalanches this weekend.

On Sunday, danger level 4, ie a major avalanche danger, was announced for Helgeland, Trollheimen, Romsdal, Sunnmøre, Indre Fjordane and both Nord- and Sør-Trøndelag.

– The Red Cross is on high alert to assist in search and rescue, but we must now have a show of strength to prevent more people from entering avalanche-prone terrain and risk being injured or losing their lives in avalanches at Easter, says Øverland.

– Can be life threatening

As a result of the many avalanches, the Red Cross has produced an information sheet in Norwegian, English and French.

The sheet has a QR code that refers to landslide warnings from NVE’s alert service Cautious.

Hotels and other tourism operators are encouraged to print and hang the sheet in relevant places.

– Everyone must now participate in a national charity event to inform both Norwegian and foreign tourists that it can be life threatening to walk in some of our most popular mountain areas right now, says Øverland.

The invitation also goes to Norwegian Easter tourists.
