He expressed this in an interview published last Friday by the French press.
“We must not embarrass Russia so that on the day the fighting stops, we can build a way out through diplomatic means,” Macron said.
“I believe that France’s role has become a mediating force,” he added USA TodaySunday (5/6/2022).
The French president said the invasion of Russian President Vladimir Putin was a historic and fundamental mistake for his people, for himself and for history.

Macron’s comments sparked anger from Ukrainian and American officials. Many called the French leader’s comments deaf and humiliating.
“Calls to avoid insulting Russia can only embarrass France and every other country that calls for it. Because Russia is embarrassing itself,” Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, tweeted on Saturday.
“We all better focus on how to put Russia in its place. It will bring peace and save lives.”
