The management of RAI last year had asked for an extension of the fee also to smartphone e tablet. Therefore, according to what RAI had asked the parliament, even mobile phones and tablets would have had to pay the fee.
This request was not accepted by the Parliament, but now RAI is back in office, explaining that it is underfunded. RAI’s budget is too small the fee is not enough and consequently the management asks Parliament to increase it.
Increases in sight: the rent is too low
But there is also another reason that pushes RAI to ask for a fee increase. Today tax evasion on the rent is zero because the fee is paid in the bill. But since 2023 the RAI fee will come out of the bill and become an autonomous tax.
Being an autonomous tax a strong tax evasion will return to the fee and consequently RAI wants to run for cover and immediately wants it to be raised. RAI also underlines how the Italian TV fee is among the lowest in Europe and therefore an increase would also serve to align with other countries. So many Italians now want to ask for exemption to avoid nasty surprises.
Exemption from the RAI fee
In fact, being exempted from the RAI fee is really possible. Just do it the appropriate application in which you declare that you do not have televisions or other suitable devices to receive the public TV signal and you will be automatically exempted from paying the fee. Be careful though because this question it had to be submitted by January 31st. Those who did not submit it at the end of January, however, can submit it again by June 30th. By submitting it by June 30, you will be exempted for the second semester of 2022.
How to apply for exemption
But there are some stakes to respect. First of all you have to tell the truth because it is essential when making this request to declare that you do not have at home televisions or computers, so if you have these devices then you risk heavy penalties. Secondly, after the request was submitted at the end of June it will have to be presented again in early 2023 because this request for exemption from the RAI fee must be submitted year after year. By asking for the exemption of the RAI fee, you will obviously avoid all the feared increases on this tax and you will save € 90 per year.
