THE Asif Ali Zardari he was elected president of Pakistan for the second time in his political career. The husband of assassinated Benazir Bhutto is returning to the honorary post after eleven years, having served in it between 2008 and 2013.
As announced by the Electoral Commission of the Asian country, Zardari won the first place having secured 411 votes of the electoral body, while his opponent Mehmood Khan Atzakzai received 181. Members of the Parliament, four provincial councils and senators participated in the voting.
Zardari’s ascension to the presidency was non-negotiable since the agreement was reached immediately after the February 8 parliamentary and regional elections. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which he co-rules with his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, had allied with Shebaz Sharif’s Muslim League (PML-N) to form a coalition government.
Based on the pre-arranged agreement, Sebaz Sharif was elected prime minister and the presidency was assumed by the now 68-year-old Asif Ali Zardari.
Independent candidates, supported by the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – the party of former prime minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since last August, won the national elections. However, PTI’s refusal to form coalitions left the field open to its political rivals who took advantage of the situation and took power.
