Asia accounts for more than half of global shoe consumption
More than every second pair of shoes is sold in Asia. According to the World Footwear 2021 Yearbook, Asia’s consumption accounted for over half (55.8 percent) of total global consumption in 2020.
The Covid-19 pandemic had a strong impact on shoe consumption in the economies of North America and Europe, helping to narrow the gap between per capita consumption across continents. Nevertheless, there are still considerable geographical differences in consumer behavior. The per capita consumption of shoes varies between 1.5 pairs in Africa and 4.3 pairs in North America.
After Asia, Europe and North America followed in terms of total consumption with 13.6 percent and 13.1 percent, respectively. The European Union as a region is the fourth largest consumer market for shoes with 1.76 billion pairs of shoes in 2020. Influenced by Brexit and the pandemic, the European Union has lost two positions in the ranking.
