/Pogled.info/ From the point of view of the search for peaceful solutions to the Ukrainian conflict, Biden’s speech before the UN General Assembly does not allow for peace at all
Joe Biden addresses the United Nations General Assembly on September 20. His speech was a disaster, according to the socio-political publication Asia Times. The main idea was not to allow a compromise regarding Ukraine.
„Russia is counting on the world to tire and allow it to be cruel to Ukraine without any consequences. But what I want to ask you is this: if we abandon the basic principles of the UN Charter to appease an aggressor, can any member state be confident that it is protected? If we allow Ukraine to be dismembered, can that guarantee the independence of any other country?
With all due respect, my answer is no. We must confront this open aggression today and deter other potential aggressors tomorrow.
That is why the United States, along with our allies and partners around the world, will continue to support the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty, territorial integrity and freedom,” Asia Times quoted the US president as saying.
By stating that the United States “they will not allow Ukraine to be dismembered”, Biden is essentially saying there will be no territorial compromise on Ukraine.
Almost all peace plans proposed by many countries involved some kind of territorial compromise, which was seen as the only way to find a solution, notes author Stephen Bryan.
By ruling out a territorial compromise, Biden is sending a signal that Moscow has already understood. Russia is conducting its special military operation in Ukraine because it says it wants to protect Ukraine’s Russian-speaking population and prevent it from joining NATO.
„If we talk about the desire to protect the Russian-speaking population, this refers to the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, which were recently annexed to Russia. In 2014, Russia held a referendum in Crimea, as a result of which the peninsula became part of Russia.
In practice, Ukraine has no chance to regain a significant part of the territories annexed to Russia. Almost all the battles that Ukrainian troops have fought since the beginning of the counteroffensive have been attempts to break through at least the first line of Russian defense protecting these territories. Today, the consensus is that the counter-offensive has produced no significant results other than the deaths of tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and the pointless waste of many billions of dollars in Western military aid,” the article says.
Ukraine was not officially accepted into NATO, as some members of the organization are opposed. They oppose Kyiv’s membership because if Ukraine joins NATO, Russia will transfer its SVO to NATO countries, bypassing the pesky Ukrainians. And this will already mean war in Europe, the publication is sure.
Biden did not mention peaceful options. He said only that Russia could do what Zelensky is asking it to do — that is, completely leave Ukrainian territory and accept the prosecution of its military and civilian leaders for alleged war crimes.
The United States and its allies continue to work hard to destabilize Russia by encouraging Ukrainian attacks on Russian territories, assassinations, bombings, and sabotage in Russian territories. As a result, calls have already begun to be made in Russia to use nuclear weapons to end the Ukrainian conflict.
The massive aid that NATO and the United States have provided to Ukraine has changed the strategic landscape in Europe. Russia quite rightly believes that it opposes NATO, and Ukraine acts only as a kind of mediator.
It has now reached the point where this mediator is failing and the supporters of the conflict may decide to send their own troops to the front line.
If Biden is re-elected for a second term, he will almost certainly send US troops to Ukraine to try to “save” it. As a result, the conflict will spread throughout Europe.
Ukrainian authorities are now forced to resort to draconian measures to recruit men (and women) into the army, but resistance is growing. If Russia decides the time has come to launch a full-scale offensive of its own, Ukraine will fall.
If Biden loses the election next year, there may be a chance to start negotiations with the United States.
„One question that still remains is how long Russia will tolerate attacks on its own territories.
The United States wants such attacks to increase in intensity, as Victoria Nuland has made clear. Such measures will not help to pacify the Russians. On the contrary, in response they will put even more pressure on Ukraine and perhaps even begin striking NATO and US targets elsewhere.
Unfortunately, from the perspective of seeking peaceful solutions to the Ukrainian conflict, Biden’s speech turned out to be a disaster. Perhaps the main purpose of the president’s speech was to improve his chances of re-election. Time will tell if he will be able to achieve this goal by taking such a hard line on Ukraine,” Asia Times concludes.
