Ashton Kutcher’s Sound Ventures backs Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs in continued AI push

Ashton Kutcher’s Sound Ventures Invests in AI Powerhouse World Labs

Ashton Kutcher’s venture capital firm, Sound Ventures, is making significant strides in the artificial intelligence sector with newfound investments, including a notable stake in Fei-Fei Li‘s ambitious startup, World Labs. The announcement was made during TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, where general partners Guy Oseary and Effie Epstein shared details of this venture and their broader focus on AI innovation.

The Rise of World Labs

Founded by Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li, who is revered as the "Godmother of AI," World Labs has garnered attention in the tech community. The startup has successfully raised $230 million from a variety of investors, including prominent names like a16z, NEA, and Radical Ventures. Its current valuation exceeds $1 billion, positioning it as a leader in the evolving AI landscape.

World Labs is set to revolutionize interactions with the 3D world by developing what it calls “large world models.” These models will cater particularly to the gaming and film industries, a domain where Kutcher’s dual identity as a Hollywood actor and investor may provide valuable insights.

Sound Ventures’ AI Ambitions

With a dedicated $265 million AI fund launched last year, Sound Ventures has already invested in several high-profile AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, Stability AI, and Magic.dev. Kutcher emphasized during the event that the firm has not sold any of its shares in OpenAI, demonstrating confidence in the continued growth and potential of the AI sector.

"We believe in the long-term vision of what OpenAI can achieve," Kutcher stated. His firm is actively exploring innovative startups aiming to create new physical form factors for AI-driven technologies as well as novel operating systems that could better support AI applications.

Innovations in AI and Hardware Integration

Guy Oseary pointed out that the existing hardware and operating system infrastructures may not be fully optimized for AI, igniting curiosity about the space’s potential. The firm previously met with Humane, creators of the AI-enabled pin, while also investing in Rabbit, an AI hardware startup co-founded by Jesse Lyu.

"There’s an interesting component to this — the Large Action Model. We see the hardware as almost a secondary factor. Instead, it’s about creating systems that learn and adapt," Epstein explained. She added that the future of AI devices might be highly variable, noting, "Today it might look like a dongle, but tomorrow it could be something completely different."

Epstein’s insights suggest a transformative vision for AI’s trajectory, potentially leading to innovations capable of challenging tech giants like Apple. "We view this more as an investment in foundational models rather than just hardware," she stated, showcasing Sound Ventures’ forward-thinking approach.

Potential Breakthroughs with Jony Ive

A noteworthy addition to Sound Ventures’ focus is their interest in a new AI device being crafted by legendary Apple designer Jony Ive, in collaboration with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Kutcher revealed, "We had a conversation with Jony today,” suggesting ongoing discussions, though a term sheet has yet to be finalized.

“Somebody’s going to have a breakthrough in this space,” Kutcher added, emphasizing the profound implications such advancements could have. His optimism signals an exciting horizon for both technological innovation and investments in AI.

Looking Forward

With its strategic investments and insights into burgeoning technologies, Sound Ventures is positioned at the forefront of the AI revolution. As the company continues to explore new opportunities and partnerships, the potential impact on the tech industry and wider consumer landscape is significant.

For technology enthusiasts and industry professionals alike, these developments provide a fertile ground for discussion and insights into the future of artificial intelligence. As advancements unfold, it’s clear that the crossroads of Hollywood and Silicon Valley are generating groundbreaking innovations that could reshape our digital and physical worlds.
