ASHLEY Banjo slammed trolls for claiming Dancing on Ice “is overwhelming the NHS”.
Denise van Outen, Rebekah Vardy’s partner Andy Buchanan and Graham Bell skater Yebin Mok were all rushed to hospital after horror falls beat them, bruised and bloodied them.
Despite praise from doctors for their loving care, some have been abused for adding to an already strained NHS during a pandemic.
Angry judge Ashley told those who were complaining: “It bothers me when people start calling people. Just look at your own life for a second.
“Let’s leave everyone alone. Just be reasonable and let’s get through this in the best possible way.
“Every time someone goes in line, they go out to entertain people on a Sunday night.
“They go out to make a living, to put food on the table for their families and to pay off their mortgage.
“I don’t think people should be so quick to judge what people are doing and whether it’s worth it or not.
“They go out there to entertain people and hopefully help people escape the garbage that is going on in the world and if that means there is a nurse who has to watch someone’s bruised shoulder one for half an hour, so be just a moment.
He added: “What people need to remember is that it’s not just the covid and the pandemic that affects you.
“Right now the country will suffer from its mental and economic health. My kids are almost two years old and they haven’t even been in a big playgroup. There’s a lot on the table now.
Fellow judge John Barrowman explained that Dancing on Ice has its own doctors who decide if the injuries are serious enough to be hospitalized.
“It is not taken lightly when it is decided that they are going to the hospital,” explained John.
“There is no special treatment, they agree with everyone.
“There will always be people who criticize him, but we have to take care of people’s health. They would criticize if they were left lying on the ice for six hours.
“We try to do our best in a situation that has been given to us and also respect the time and work that everyone in the NHS devotes.
“The NHS is the most important thing in our world right now and the frontline workers caring for our sick and infected. “
In Sunday’s premiere episode, viewers saw how several contestants – celebrities and professional skaters – were rushed to A&E after suffering horrific injuries in rehearsals.
At the start of the show, former Olympic skier Graham Bell admitted he felt “so guilty” after his partner Yebin, 36, “lost a piece of his leg” when he fell and cut her off.
Next, viewers watched popular presenter Denise Van Outen discolour her shoulder during rehearsals with her professional partner, Matt Evers.
Finally, viewers became more annoyed when the third horrific injury showed Rebekah Vardy accidentally slit the face of her partner Andy Buchanan.
John added, “It’s a dangerous sport. You are on ice with blades. If something happens and they turn around and kick you with the blade, you’re going to cut yourself.
“There’s that element of risk, but that’s why the excitement is there to watch it. In the back of your mind you are thinking, are they going to fall?
“I don’t know if it’s bloodier than in any other season, but there have always been injuries and blood on the ice. It comes with the territory. “
Ashley added, “Words are just words when we say Dancing on Ice is dangerous and difficult.
“People at home won’t know how difficult it is until they try it. They won’t believe how dangerous it is until they see someone bleeding from their face. “
Dancing On Ice viewers were furious that the show would place an additional burden on the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic, calling it “irresponsible”.
One Twitter user wrote: ‘UK Gov:’ Don’t put unnecessary pressure on the NHS ‘. ITV: Let’s tie knives to the feet of celebrities. “
Another added: “It’s a little strange that they all continue to claim victims. A little rash towards the NHS right now, sure. “
And a third said, “I just watched the first episode of Dancing On Ice. Two people had to go to A and E because of skating accidents. Our NHS is being pushed to full capacity at the moment. Skating is certainly not essential at the moment !! “
