Asharq Al-Awsat: Washington is angry with Lebanon and Israel, but is determined to complete the border agreement

The newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat stressed that in an attempt to defuse the military tension between “Israel” and Lebanon due to divergences on the demarcation of maritime borders, the American mediator, Amos Hochstein, has stepped up his efforts to overcome the crisis and progress. towards an agreement in the next few days.
In this context, sources in the White House confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that Hochstein is establishing vigorous contacts with Beirut and Tel Aviv and that he may return to the region for this purpose. According to well-informed Israeli sources, the US administration has expressed to both sides its anger at their behavior.
The sources said Washington was surprised by Lebanese reservations about Hochstein’s draft agreement and Israel’s outright rejection of it, and told them these statements should not have been made by either side, which raised tension and thwarted the deal and affirmed his desire to see further progress in the negotiations. If an agreement could not be reached during the era of Yair Lapid’s rule, he sees it as a missed opportunity that will result in a heavy loss for Lebanon.
