Morut – The Department of Agriculture of North Morowali Regency (Morut) confirmed that swine flu caused by the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus has spread in this area and caused dozens of livestock to die, and prevention measures have been taken.
Head of Animal Husbandry of the Morut Agriculture Service, Ramlawati, said that her party has gone into the field to monitor the spread of this virus, especially in Tiwaa Village, Mori Atas District, where more than 20 livestock are known to have died from swine flu.
Ramlah, said that swine flu cannot be treated, it can only be prevented by vaccines, but unfortunately this ASF vaccine is not yet available in Morut, even in Central Sulawesi.
So the most effective way to prevent the spread of ASF is to temporarily stop livestock traffic between villages or areas, both cattle for slaughter and livestock breeds.
“Stop livestock traffic first until the virus is declared completely gone,” he said.
The next way is for all breeders to maintain the cleanliness of their cages, because viruses generally emerge from cages that are not well sanitized.
Cattle are temporarily given feed from concentrates, not from rotting food.
He doesn’t know exactly which villages are affected by swine flu, because data collection is still ongoing. He hopes that village heads whose livestock belonging to the community are affected by swine flu, are asked to immediately report the incident to the Morut Agriculture Service.
Ramlah, requested that livestock with indications of swine flu be removed immediately away from other livestock herds, and livestock infected with flu should not be consumed because their meat is unhealthy.
“ASF or swine flu will not infect humans, but pork that is infected with flu is not good for consumption,” said Ramlah, adding that domestic pigs are very sensitive to ASF, so breeders must be vigilant, especially from the health of the cage and feed. (RLS/ NAL)
