ASEMEVE is born, the Association for the Study of Vascular Medicine

With the aim of continuing the multidisciplinary work around vascular risk diseases, the Association for the Study of Vascular Medicine in Spain (ASEMEVE) was born. Spain was the only European country without a scientific society cspecifically entry into the study of vascular diseases as a whole, despite being the leading cause of death worldwide.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that, in 2015, 17.7 million people died from this cause, which represents 31% of all deaths Registered in the world. In Spain, according to the data provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the vascular disease is responsible for almost 30% of deaths In our country.

ASEMEVE has as an end promote research, knowledge, education and public awareness on vascular diseases, and thus help health professionals in their daily practice, collaborating in improving the health and quality of life of patients.

The knowledge that society in general has about vascular diseases in our country, its prevention and detection, is much better. Therefore, we believe that if the professionals involved in their diagnosis and treatment We work together and improve the knowledge of Vascular Medicine, both at a medical-scientific and informative level, we can help significantly reduce the high number of people who suffer from them”, Explains the doctor Manuel Monreal, President of ASEMEVE.

The association groups, for the moment, a more than 200 specialists among which are internists, surgeons, pulmonologists, emergency physicians, hematologists and other experts. “We have multiple specialists for each to contribute their knowledge and get to transfer the different advances and knowledge to the patient that are generated. This way of working is a role model for addressing many other pathologies.”, Says the doctor Antonio Zapatero, first vice president of ASEMEVE.

In this sense, Dr. Manuel Monreal adds that “We hope to progressively count on the interest of fellow cardiologists, neurologists, nephrologists, angiologists, endocrinologists, primary care doctors and any other medical specialty involved in Vascular Medicine

The three main causes of vascular death

The myocardial infarction, cerebral vascular disease and pulmonary embolism Are the three main causes of vascular death in Spain. “The first two are complications of an arterial disease (arteriosclerosis) that develops over years and in which we can and we must influence long before irreparable injuries occur”, Says Dr. Manuel Monreal. For this, it is important to early detection of people at risk, the modification of your habits of unhealthy life and the rigorous control of hypertension, diabetes or hypercholesterolemia, which are the main risk factors.

For its part, in the case of the prevention of pulmonary embolism, “needed improve early identification of situations that facilitate thrombosis in the veins to better reduce the risk”, Says the expert.

In general, and as the doctor affirms Pilar Escribano, second vice president of ASEMEVE, “Prevention strategies in arterial disease are well known and are part of the basic health recommendation known to all health levels. But recommendations to prevent venous system thrombosis are more unknown and involve multiple medical specialties

Between the startup projects of the new association highlights the study of the venous thromboembolic disease (prevention, early diagnosis and treatment), in addition to the monitoring and treatment of patients with peripheral artery disease and control of the risk factors of the different vascular diseases.

Further, ASEMEVE is confederated to the European Society of Vascular Medicine (ESVM), which together will celebrate next October VI Congress of the European Society of Vascular Medicine (ESVM) and the I National Congress of the Association for the Study of Vascular Medicine (ASEMEVE) in Torremolinos (Málaga).
