“Ascension Day: Celebrating the Completion of Human Salvation”

Today we celebrate the church holiday of the Ascension of the Lord (Salvation Day).

It is always celebrated on Thursday, the 40th day after Easter.

According to the New Testament, 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus Christ remained on Earth to preach his teaching and converse with the apostles, moving among them as a God-man.

The holiday is also called Spasovden, because with Christ’s ascension completes the act of human salvation.

On that day, at the foot of the Mount of Olives, Christ ascended into heaven.

In the folk calendar, the seven Thursdays after Easter are celebrated against hail, and the last of them – Spasovden – is associated with the cult of the dead.

According to belief, on this day the souls of all the dead who have been free since Maundy Thursday come home. That’s why Chereshova Zadushnitsa is celebrated on the Saturday after the holiday.

According to Bulgarian folk beliefs, on the 40th day of Easter, samodivas also come. They pick and show off the dew that bloomed on the night before Spasovden.

The sick and the childless can be treated with it.

In the morning, one guesses about the outcome of the disease on the water in the green panic. If a flower or a leaf floats in it, the outcome will be favorable, therefore the water should be drunk for 40 days.

It is also widely believed that early in the morning of the Savior’s Day, if a person silently goes to an empty well and looks into it, instead of his own image, he will see the image of his deceased relative, about whom he is thinking at the moment.

The day is a professional holiday of bakers and confectioners, as well as drivers. They celebrate their city holiday in Aheloy, Dolna Banya, Kiten and Trastenik.
