The Surinamese-Dutch activist Asawini has been released and left for the Netherlands today. In this video by De Vliegende Reporter you can see that she arrived at the airport under the guidance of someone from the Dutch embassy in Suriname and her two lawyers.
She indicated that she is doing well and that she must leave Suriname, but do so voluntarily for her own safety. She also said she will not give up her fight.
The activist whose real name is Regita Edenburg was deported to French Guiana last week. She told LIM FM it felt like a hostage situation and she didn’t know where she was.
She was then taken back to Paramaribo because procedural errors were allegedly made. Vice President Brunswijk visited her last night.
She said to journalists who asked questions at the airport today: “I would like to say to Suriname that justice and truth make you free. She didn’t want to say much else. “You will hear from me,” Asawini said.
