The Secretary of the “Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq” movement, Qais al-Khazali, surprised the Iraqis yesterday, when he said in a sermon on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr yesterday, that the DNA analysis of the former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, “proved that he is from India.”
Al-Khazali said, “Saddam Hussein was spreading his statements about the Iraqi people’s origin from India,” adding that, after DNA analysis, “it was found that he was from India.”
No party leader had ever mentioned the origins of the former president of the former regime, or his “Nada” clan, just as the reports that followed his arrest at the end of 2003 only dealt with analyzing Saddam Hussein’s connection to the bodies of his two sons, Uday and Qusay, to prove his identity.
Khazali did not mention how he inferred the origins of the former president of the regime, and how he learned about his ancestry through genetic examination, which is usually conducted in private laboratories, but those close to him told Asharq Al-Awsat that he relied on studies prepared by Iraqi researchers interested in the ancestry of the peoples who inhabited Iraq, during the past century, concluded that the Al-Nada clan is of “Indo-Aryan” origins, but it is difficult to verify the sobriety and reliability of these studies.
Khazali’s statements sparked widespread controversy on social media, and while many attacked what they described as “distracting the public away from important events”, others reported statements by lineages in the origins of Iraqi tribes who claimed that a spectrum of Iraqis are not actually Arabs.
