AS Saint-Etienne Defeats Angers in Ligue 2 Showdown: Recap and Highlights

This Monday evening, it’s time for the closing meeting of the 12th day of Ligue 2, and what a poster! Two confident contenders for promotion to Ligue 1 face each other at Geoffroy-Guichard. The 5th in the ranking, AS Saint-Etienne, welcomes the 2nd, Angers, who are two points ahead. In other words, both teams have a big chance to make if they succeed this Monday evening. Because yes, there wasn’t just the Ballon d’Or ceremony at the very beginning of the week. The two coaches, Laurent Batlles and Alexandre Dujeux, have not reserved any major surprises for this summit meeting.

The first period is played at a very high pace between two teams who do not hide and who take turns creating clear chances. Himad Abdelli, very prominent in this first act, warms up Etienne Green who relaxes well, then Loïs Diony has two opportunities to open the scoring but is not effective, before having the ball taken away by Léo Pétrot. Opposite, ASSE also has chances but at the break, no goal is scored in a very pleasant match to follow which is just waiting to settle down.

Saint-Etienne makes the difference and climbs to second place

The Greens had to be patient in this match but will ultimately make the difference. On a corner hit by Mathieu Cafaro, Ibrahim Sissoko, the man in form from ASSE, places an unstoppable header for Yahia Fofana (51st). Almost immediately, Léo Pétrot, the left side, rushes into the Angevin area before adjusting the opposing goalkeeper with his right foot (59th). More enterprising after the break, the Greens came out on top and passed their evening opponent in 2nd place, two points behind Stade Lavallois.

For their part, Angers had difficulty finishing the match and lost for the first time since the heavy defeat suffered in Rodez on September 16 and missed the opportunity to come back to Laval. The Angevins caused problems for the Greens in the first act before having to bow after the break. A reaction will therefore be expected on the pitch at Stade Raymond-Kopa next Saturday against Valenciennes to try to get the machine back on track against an opponent within reach.

To sum up

AS Saint-Etienne logically dominates Angers at Geoffroy-Guichard at the end of the 12th day of Ligue 2 after a lively match and is getting closer to the first place occupied for several weeks by Stade Lavallois.
