There could easily be a rift between Leonardo Bonucci and 1. FC Union Berlin this winter. The 36-year-old defender is barely included in the plans for the German capital and is suffering from homesickness, according to Corriere dello Sport. José Mourinho’s AS Roma has shown interest.

Many were surprised when Bonucci suddenly showed up at Union Berlin last summer. The defender came over on a free transfer from Juventus and signed a one-year contract, which could be extended for a second year through an option.

The latter is not expected to happen. In fact, Bonucci already wants to return to his native country this winter, it sounds. The defender is homesick for his family, who did not travel from Turin to Berlin.

The urge to go home cannot be seen separately from Bonucci’s sporting achievements. The 2021 European champion only appeared on the field seven times in the Bundesliga this season, six of which as a starter.

Under the now dismissed Urs Fischer, Bonucci was substituted after a quarter of the match in his last match (0-4 loss at Bayer Leverkusen) due to thigh problems. Under his successor Nenad Bjelica, the Italian remained on the bench for two full games and was allowed to come on as a substitute against 1. FC Köln.

In Italy it is taken into account that Bonucci has played his last match for Union. AS Roma would like to see the man marker come. The Romans want to climb the rankings in the second half of the season and will meet Feyenoord in the interim round of the Europa League (15 and 22 February).

If a deal is actually reached, Bonucci will have to miss the meeting with his former employer Juventus. Roma and Juventus will face each other on December 30. Juventus will be guests at Stadio Olimpico at the beginning of May.

Bonucci played most of his career in the black and white of Juventus, making 290 league appearances between 2010-2017 and 2018-2023. In Italy he played for AS Bari, AC Milan and Internazionale, among others.
