AS Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove was hit by a beer bottle during the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Lazio on Wednesday. The bottle was thrown at the Italian from the audience.
The 21-year-old Bove was substituted fifteen minutes before the end by coach José Mourinho. On the sidelines he was hit in the neck by the beer bottle.
Bove took a knee for a moment, but then decided to quickly walk to the dugout. He barely managed to avoid a second beer bottle.
“I didn’t think it was time to start a riot and make a scene,” Bove told reporters after the match. Sky Sports Italia. “The competent authorities will intervene, because this is of course not normal. But I prefer to talk about the things that happened on the field.”
AS Roma lost the Roman derby against Lazio 1-0 through a penalty. This was caused by eighteen-year-old Dutchman Dean Huijsen, who had an unfortunate starting debut.
Bove stood up for Huijsen afterwards. “I can only compliment him, because he was there in this match. Everyone will analyze the penalty moment, but this does not detract from his performance. He is a good boy who has already been included in the group.”
