AS Roma Fined for Racism, Mourinho’s Intervention Saves the Day

Jakarta

AS Roma fined for racist chants directed at his supporters Dejan Stankovic. However, the punishment seems to be lighter thanks Jose Mourinho.

The incident occurred when Roma won 3-0 over Sampdoria in a Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico, Sunday (2/4/2023). Sampdoria had to end the match with 10 men following a red card for Jeison Murillo.

When Sampdoria had to play with 10 people, Dejan Stankovic as coach of Sampdoria protested. Roma fans responded with racist chants.

Hearing this, Mourinho who looked unhappy immediately took action. The Roma coach raised his right hand, demanding that the ultras in the Curva Sud stop his racist chants.

Mourinho’s instructions were then followed by the fans who then stopped the racist chants and changed them to just ‘boo’ choruses. Mourinho also returned to give appreciation with a thumbs up.

For the act of the fans, Roma was fined 8,000 euros (around Rp. 130 million). However, it was later revealed that Mourinho’s intervention, which helped put a stop to supporters’ racist chants, saved Roma from more severe punishment.

“Roma were fined 8,000 euros following a chant at the opposing coach by all the fans in the Curva Sud. The penalty was reduced because the chant was not repeated after the intervention of their coach,” read a statement from the sports judge as reported by Football Italia.

Dejan Stankovic is a former Lazio player and was coached by Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan. The two of them helped Inter win the treble in 2010.
