As people travel more and more, congestion is forming on Europe ‘s borders

As the epidemiological situation in Europe has improved, more and more people have started to travel and go on holiday to other countries. In some places, such as Slovenia, there have been major bottlenecks at border controls, partly due to the verification of Covid-19 certificates.

Vaccinations and falling morbidity have encouraged people to resume international travel and many go to other countries by car. To ensure free and safe movement within the European Union (EU), people must use a digital Covid-19 certificate. A document that can be printed or downloaded to a smartphone confirms that the person has been vaccinated against Covid-19 or has contracted a virus, or has received a negative test result.

Certificate holders are not required to self-isolate or perform an additional test in the country of destination. It takes time to check documents at national borders. And, for example, a lot of congestion has developed on the Slovenian-Croatian border. The lines of machines stretch for several kilometers and some have to wait for several hours.

Bojan Gregorič, Assistant Commander of the Gruškovje Border Police Station in Slovenia, stated: “Police officers, shift managers and police station management work with Croatian colleagues on a daily and hourly basis. We communicate regularly to coordinate traffic flow together. ”

The major congestion is due to the fact that Covid-19 certificates are being checked at the border for everyone, and to the fact that many are now on holiday and people are going on holiday to other countries. And Croatia is one of the most popular destinations.

CONTEXT:

In mid-May, EU Member States and the European Parliament agreed that the Covid-19 digital certificate would be operational from 1 July. This will confirm that the owner has either been vaccinated or has contracted Covid-19, or has just taken a Covid-19 test.

Covid-19 certificates in Latvia started on June 1. Citizens can create Covid-19 certificates on the website “covid19sertifikats.lv“by connecting to one of the secure access means. It is recommended that you save the generated certificate to your smart device or print it on paper.
