Mark Zakerberg, head of Facebook, said on Thursday that the company was being renamed Meta.

I am proud to announce that as of today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same – to continue to bring people, our apps and their brands together – they don’t change, ”said Zakerberg.

Even after the change of the company’s name, its platforms “Facebook”, “Instagram” and “WhatsApp” will retain the existing names.

Skeptics say the name change is an attempt to change the subject of a scandal surrounding recently leaked documents that revealed that Facebook had ignored internal messages and warnings about the harm its social networks are causing and increasing in the world.

Investigations by legislators and regulators have begun in many parts of the world following revelations in Facebook documents.

The Real Facebook Oversight Board, an activist organization, has warned that large companies in many industries, including the oil and tobacco industry, tend to rebrand in order to “distract” from their problems.

“Facebook believes that rebranding can help them change the subject,” the organization said last week, adding that the “real issue” is the need for monitoring and regulation.
