As Euro Host, St Petersburg Russia Sets Record for COVID-19 Deaths

Appointed as host Euro 2020 even a disaster for the City of St. Petersburg, Russia. Russian authorities have recorded that the number of deaths from Corona in St Petersburg has reached a record.

Reported AFP, St Petersburg host the quarter-finals which will take place on Friday. Now, local health agencies are reporting a spike in deaths.

According to official tallies, there have been 110 deaths from Corona in St Petersburg over the past 24 hours. This figure is a record.

There is also a state of emergency in the capital Moscow. The Moscow government reported 124 deaths due to COVID-19.

In a day, there are 21,650 thousand cases of Corona in Russia in a day. The total number of coronavirus cases in Russia has reached 5.5 million, which makes it the fifth highest country in the world.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said his region broke a new record for the number of hospitalizations in the past week.

“The situation with the coronavirus in Moscow remains very difficult,” he was quoted as saying by the news agency Interfax reported AFP, Tuesday (29/6/2021).

The Delta variant caused the transmission rate in Moscow to be so high. The local government ordered a number of companies to repatriate their employees who had not been vaccinated. Meanwhile, restaurants in Moscow can only serve citizens who have been vaccinated.

“Those who have been vaccinated, who care about their health and the health of others, can live full lives,” a resident at a restaurant, Olga Dombak, 31, told AFP. AFP.
