As elections approach… Why did CJI DY Chandrachud say, this is the truth of our society

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Thursday said the number of ‘fraud cases’ in the Supreme Court increases as elections approach and the court becomes a venue for political engagement. Speaking at the Constitution Day function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the Supreme Court, the CJI said that we all exist together and the Indian Constitution tells us that ‘either we will survive or perish together.’

According to news agency PTI, he further said, ‘But above all, I think it is important that on the day we celebrate the Constitution, we learn to perform our duties for the sake of justice. Our duty to justice goes far beyond success or failure in individual cases.

He further said that ‘Just yesterday, I had to deal with a fraud case. The Supreme Court deals with fraud cases every day. In some courts, fraud cases are more than their share and at times when elections come, the number of fraud cases in the court increases and we as judges realize this.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said that ‘after the elections are over, things become quiet and as the elections approach, the court becomes the site of political engagement. This is the truth of our society. I am not looking at it with any value judgment. Chief Justice Chandrachud, who also addressed the gathering in Hindi for a few minutes, said that freedom and the Constitution are inextricably linked.
