The German footballer Mesut Özil (34) confirms on Wednesday morning that he is giving up as a footballer.
He confirms this on social media.
– After careful consideration, I choose to sign up as a footballer. It has been an honor to play professionally for over 17 years and I feel very lucky. Recently, I have struggled a lot with injuries, and it is clear to me that the choice to retire is the right one, Özil writes on Instagram.
Özil has recently played for Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir, but is best known for his time at Real Madrid and Arsenal. The 34-year-old is regarded by many as one of Germany’s best midfielders of all time.
The veteran also has 92 international matches and 23 goals for his home country Germany, and won the World Cup in football in 2014.
