But ARVs only work to cut off the growth of new viruses.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Head of the PKJN Inpatient Installation at the RSJ Dr. H Marzoeki Mahdi Bogor, Dr. Ayie Sri Kartika, said that antiretroviral drug therapy (ARV) has not been able to work to kill Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). ). ARV therapy is taken only to stop the growth of new viruses.
“ARV therapy has not been able to kill the HIV/AIDS virus directly. But ARVs function to cut the growth of new viruses,” said Ayie when speaking at a virtual conference on HIV/AIDS, Thursday (7/4/2022).
Ayie explained that when HIV/AIDS enters a person’s body and when it replicates into a new virus, it requires an enzyme that is present in the human body. He added, it is in the human immune system. By taking ARVs, he continued, this virus will not become a new virus because it will not divide completely. Because, he continued, ARV drug therapy will cut off the new virus.
Therefore, he continued, ARV drugs must be taken for life. Ayie said ARV drugs were divided into several types. Some are taken every 12 hours and some are every 24 hours. The long duration of this drug, he added, affects the effectiveness of the drug in the body so that it can run well. However, he reminded that ARV drugs cannot be taken alone or independently.
“Because in HIV/AIDS patients there is a combination of drugs that must be taken to make some ARV regimens work and become strong in the body,” he said.
He added, the combination of these drugs will be maximized in the body when using ARV drug therapy and other types of drugs.
