The art world was once again in the spotlight when culture fans discovered what looked like a modern phone
The art world was once again in the spotlight when culture buffs discovered what looked like a modern smartphone in an old painting, the Daily Star reports.
The artwork, which is owned by the New York Museum of Art, is an original 1882 work by R. Josey and James Archer titled The Engagement of Burns and Highland Mary. It depicts the romantic moment of engagement between the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns and his lover Mary Campbell, also known as Highland Mary.
What caught the attention of museum visitors, however, was an object resembling a smartphone in shape and size.
In the painting, the lovers stand on the banks of the River Aire, looking into each other’s eyes and holding an oblong object with rounded corners that evokes associations with an early model iPhone. Such an unexpected coincidence did not leave fans of art and literature indifferent, and many thought about the possibility of time travel by Burns or the authors of engravings themselves.
After all, the first iPhone appeared just 125 years after this photo was taken. Did any Scottish poet or artists have such an amazing ability to predict the future?
However, researchers quickly found a more rational explanation for this mystery. The moment of Burns and Mary’s betrothal by the River Eyre is a well-known episode in history. According to legend, they decided to reinforce their vows to each other using the ancient Scottish tradition of exchanging bibles over running water. It is this attribute, symbolizing fidelity and respect, that young people actually hold in their hands.
The tradition of exchanging Bibles over water dates back to ancient times and is a symbolic act that testifies to the unbreakable fidelity and spiritual attachment of two people.
