Artists Thank François Noël for 20 Years of Dedication at Nîmes Theater

FREE MIDI INFO. New episode in the crisis at the Nîmes theater. While the city attacks the management of former director François Noël, 70 artists publish a text to thank him for his work at the head of the institution for 20 years.

The series continues… François Noël left the management of the Nîmes theater at the end of last January. The municipality, the association’s main financial supporter, criticizes it for expensive management and a financial hole. He defended himself by blaming the drop in subsidies, following the financial crisis.

In this context, a collective of seventy artists, from all backgrounds, regularly programmed in recent years by François Noël, publishes a thank you text. The Publicis consultants agency is responsible for distributing the letter, which should give it some resonance in cultural circles.

Among the signatories, the choreographer Philippe Découflé, the conductor of Les Siècles François-Xavier Roth, the actors Rodolphe Dana, Patrice Thibaud, François Morel, the author Fellag, the figures of the flamenca scene Israel Galvan, Andres Marin, Rocio Molina or Eva Yerbabuena, the American company Trisha Brown or Dominique Mercy, former artistic director of the Pina Bausch company, the cellist Vincent Courtois, the dancers Olivier Dubois and Fabrice Ramalingon, the directors Bruno Geslin, Martial di Fonzo Bo, Guillame de Séverac-Schmitz and Dan Jemmett or the former director of the Uzès Danse festival, Liliane Schaus. The next season has not yet been made public, but some are scheduled for it.

“Unfailing dedication alongside the artists”

“All of us, actors, directors, choreographers and musicians, would like to send our warmest thanks to François Noël for his unfailing dedication over the last twenty years alongside the artists and their projects,” write the artists.

They continue: “Since 2003, he has worked within the Nîmes theater to promote the vitality of the performing arts with the sole adage of audacity and diversity. The relevance of his programming and the intelligence of their inscriptions in political thinking global cultural heritage, have contributed to our loyalty to Nîmes, to its audiences and to its territory.”

And to conclude: “We had the chance to meet spectators from diverse origins, curious and warm. Each and every one of us in our own right, we are proud to have participated alongside François Noël and its teams all these years, to this ideal of a popular theater in the noble sense of the term”.
