Artists demand that the cultural emergency be “recognized and addressed” in Peru

Lima, Jan 30 (EFE) .- Groups, scenic collectives and renowned independent artists demanded that the president of Peru, Francisco Sagasti, “recognize and address the emergency” facing culture in his country in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. 19.

“We demand that the cultural emergency be recognized and addressed through new approaches and exceptional measures that respond to the situation in which we find ourselves,” said a letter sent this Saturday to the Peruvian leader.

The letter was sent by members of the Movement of Independent Theater Groups of Peru (MGTIP), in which artists recognized by the State with national cultural awards and as “meritorious personalities” of Peruvian culture participate.

PROPOSALS AND REQUIREMENTS

In the letter, the proposals and demands of the artists are exposed to Sagasti, who point out that the measures implemented to face the pandemic, which from this Sunday will include a new quarantine in ten regions, “are insufficient, they are not inclusive, nor do they respond to the scale of the current crisis “.

“Artists and workers of art and cultures remain standing. We respond to the crisis with our active and purposeful resistance, our solidarity organization, our poetic creations and actions,” added MGTIP.

The signatories express to the president their “maximum concern” for the situation of artists throughout the country and emphasize that in the midst of the generalized crisis caused by the pandemic, they constitute “a sector of extreme affectation and vulnerability.”

WITHOUT CARE OR REACTIVATION

The letter remarked that in the midst of the health emergency they have not been “truly attended to, nor has it been possible” their economic reactivation, and that the aid given by the Ministry of Culture “has been insufficient and not very inclusive”, since they have reached less than 10% of cultural workers.

“The right to culture and the continuity of thousands of creative processes are in a state of emergency. We demand that the permanent and substantial contribution of art be recognized for the integral development of the country and that responses be generated according to the scale of the crisis, with the participation of our organizations, “he added.

Among other proposals, he pointed out that they have proposed the formation of an intersectoral commission and permanent working groups “that go beyond the current period of government, to guarantee the continuity and organic nature of decisions and actions.”

TO THE LIMIT OF SURVIVAL

The signatories affirmed that they share their proposal on behalf of thousands of “artists, creators, pedagogues and cultural managers, many of whom” have had to stop and others are in extreme situations of survival. ”

“The cultural emergency must be recognized and addressed as part of the state’s priorities,” they concluded.

The letter was signed by renowned characters from Peruvian theater and culture such as Miguel Rubio, Ana Correa Benites, Jorge Chiarella, María Celeste Viale, Luis Humberto Gonzales, César Arturo Mejía, Oscar Naters and María Luisa De Zela, among others. EFE
