The Garden Parties of Lausanne, like here the Concerts at the dawn of the Thelonica association in 2018, are on the initiative of the RIPOSTE collective in Montbenon this summer.

It took more than a virus to get them off the stage. They are the actors of the Lausanne culture who, despite the cascading cancellations who have sealed their summer season say “classic”, phosphorus in record time to offer an alternative “credible and unifying”. Supported by the Municipality, a week after the presentation of a municipal stimulus plan for culture endowed with 2.5 million francs, they unveiled this Monday the fruit of their cogitations: it is CultureDebout, or how to reconnect with the public all summer, respecting the social distances of course required. “Culture is alive and well”, rejoiced lhe trustee Grégoire Junod, qualifying the original and free offer as “generous, ambitious, militant and artisanal”.

It is at Montbenon Park that the most exemplary concretization of the joint work of festivals that have never collaborated until now, at least so closely, will take shape. Over five weekends, from July 17 to August 15, ten institutions will share the spaces, delimited in three zones of 300 people maximum (two outdoors and one indoors), each with its own bar and its own restaurant. These are the Garden Parties, the Fête de la musique, Cinémas d’Afrique, the Fête de la danse, JazzOnze +, the N / O / D / E festival, the Bobins de Valency, the Toiles de Milan and the Orchester de Lausanne Chamber. All grouped under the RIPOSTE collective. Everyone obviously had to reduce their usual canopy. Thus, there will be only one projection of the Bobins de Valency, JazzOnze + will be content with five concerts and Festival d’Afrique with three projects. In order to be able to trace participants in the event of contamination, registrations will be compulsory. As elsewhere for all CultureDebout offers.
CultureDebout will evolve according to FOPH directives
Summer programming will not only focus on the Montbenon park. Even if they have already been announced, new versions of canceled events are joining CultureDebout: At the edge of the city (July 7 to 12), by the Festival de la Cité, the Arsenic Thursdays (until August 6), which will take place as often as possible in the courtyard, or BDFIL (July 20 to September 27), which will transform into a theater of images in public space. Let’s add another 10 canvases under the stars (June 27 to August 29), the MOJA Festival (July 23 to 26) and the interventions of the collective Et now… (July 2 to 5). “We will offer around twenty open-air creations in twenty different places, between Lausanne and Renens. From one to thirty spectators, to enter into festive resistance ”, explains Wanda Smith for the collective.
The Lausanne authorities calculate CultureDebout at 350,000 francs. A sum included in the 2.5 million francs of the stimulus plan for culture which will be presented to the Municipal Council next August. The content of CultureDebout may change according to the directives of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). “In one direction as in the other,” warns the trustee.
