As reported, the organizer of the general Latvian Song and Dance Festival, the Latvian National Cultural Center (LNKC), announced the competition in January 2021 and received a total of four applications for artistic concepts. The competition took place in two rounds – the first, in accordance with the regulations, the submitted concepts were reviewed and evaluated by the commission, maintaining the anonymity of the participants, while the second round was a negotiated procedure, during which artistic teams presented the submitted creative plans and repertoire.
On July 1, 2021, the commission, summarizing the evaluation obtained in both rounds, recognized as the best the already mentioned concept created by artistic director Jānis Retenas and director Elīna Apsīte entitled “We play and celebrate over time in Latvia”.
We remind you that the XXVII General Latvian Song and XVI Dance Festival will mark the 150th anniversary of the tradition. The creative team intends to design the concert as a way from the beginning of the tradition to a modern sound, showing how versatile, different and gorgeous the performance of wind orchestras is.
The application states: “Where did the wind instrument come from? It started with a breath blown into a reed stalk, from a breath blown into a clay duck, from a man’s will to create, to report to the world about himself, his strength and ability. and it starts to sound, it starts to live, creating the joy of living in the listener and in the player himself! ” The concert is intended to highlight the repertoire of popular wind orchestras that have been played for 150 years and have stood the test of time.
