REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Infection human papillomavirus (HPV) can not only cause cervical cancer, but also anal cancer. This can happen because of the similarity of cells.
“Because the cells in the cervix are similar to the cells in the anus, this area becomes more sensitive to viruses,” said obstetrician and gynecologist Keven Tali in a health discussion with the theme “Expanding Coverage, Strengthening Awareness: Together Achieving a Generation Cervical Cancer Free” in Jakarta, Tuesday (14/11/2023).
Keven said HPV transmitted through sexual contact. People are at risk of contracting this virus if they have sex with multiple partners, have sex too early, and give birth to more than five children.
Furthermore, Keven explained, apart from causing cervical cancer and anal cancer, HPV infection can also cause genital warts. According to Keven, even though he had been treated, the virus was the cause genital warts They can still stay in the body, so that when the body’s immunity decreases or the body is re-exposed, genital warts can appear again.
“So, never take it lightly because when warts appear, they can infect other people. For men, apart from genital warts, they can get penile cancer,” said Keven, who is a member of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association.
