May 5, 2023 Actions & Projects
International photographic works on four Cologne archives form the core of the Artist Meets Archive program of the Internationale Photoszene Köln (May 12 to 21, 2023). The program focuses on the photographic holdings of Cologne archives and collections.
After a lengthy phase of work and research at the Nazi Documentation Center, the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, the Museum of East Asian Art and the Rheinisches Bildarchiv, the results culminated in exhibitions and interventions by Naoya Hatakeyama, Lebohang Kganye, Pablo Lerma and Lilly Lulay. In general, it is about “the examination of the different types of visibility in the medium of photography. It ranges from a female perspective (#femalegaze) on colonial contexts to a tourist view (#touristgaze), which is fixed in the collective visual memory. She explores the relationship between the artificial vision (#algorithmicgaze) of an image recognition program and human vision. And finally also refers to how the gaze of power (#gazeofpower) ensures what remains hidden in photographs and the archives that house them.” A public symposium entitled Research Meets Artist on May 13, 2023 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m ) accompanies the exhibition program of Artist Meets Archive #3 in the Rheinisches Bildarchiv in the Historical Archive in Cologne.
