During the opening show “See us do”, the artist Hind Eljadid proclaimed pro-Palestinian messages. She would normally read a haiku from former European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, but disrupted the event with a different message. Campaigners from the crowd then shouted messages such as “free Palestine” and “ceasefire now”. Several people from the audience brought Palestinian flags and chanted from the Grote Markt.
The event was briefly stopped for viewers watching live. The police were able to remove some activists from the audience, but the artists who were ready to perform behind the scenes had difficulty convincing them to sing on stage.
Nevertheless, Laura Tesoro started her performance a little later and spoke full of praise for the activists. Later she waved a Palestinian flag during her performance. After her performance, the livestream was interrupted again.
