Artist Anete Melece’s children’s book “Kiosk” in Sweden has received the Peter Pan Prize in Literature

The book “Kiosk” by artist and animation film director Anete Melece in Sweden has received the Peter Pan Prize in Literature, the LETA agency was informed by the platform “Latvian Literature”.

The prize is awarded to a high-quality book for children or adolescents created by a new author or an author representing a country whose literature has previously been little known in Sweden.

According to the website of the publishing house “Liels un mazs”, “Kiosks” is a story about a seller from a Riga kiosk Olga, who is so fat that she is stuck in the kiosk and does not get out of it. Her dream is to get to the warm countries and enjoy the view of the sunset by the sea. One day, the chain of random events unfolds so that Olga with the whole kiosk falls into the city canal, which swims her far into the world – all the way to the coveted beach with palm trees and the sun.

The plot of the book, which encourages to think about a person’s “stuck” in his life and inability to realize dreams, is both comical and sad. Olga’s character is also well felt, that she is not only a funny fat and insensitive dreamer who replaces reality with magazine pictures, but also the small center of her neighborhood, important and necessary for other people, the book is written on the “Big and Small” website.

Melece is an internationally successful animation filmmaker and artist living in Latvia and Switzerland. She has previously collaborated with the publishing house Liels un mazs and illustrated the books of Maira Dobele, Juris Kronbergs and Inga Gaile.

Melece originally showed the idea for the book by creating a seven-minute animated film “Kiosk”. Melece received more than 20 different awards for the animated film at various film festivals. The book has been translated and published in several languages.
