Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia asks why Russian peacekeeping forces failed to prevent Azerbaijan’s offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh.
– We warned about this. Why did they not fulfill their peacekeeping functions, Pasjinjan said in a televised speech on Thursday.
He pointed out that the Russians eventually managed to negotiate a cease-fire agreement.
– Why were they unable to negotiate an agreement to prevent the attack on Nagorno-Karabakh?
Azerbaijan’s offensive began on Tuesday. A day later, Azerbaijani forces had taken control of the entire disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The ethnic Armenian separatists who had ruled parts of the region since the 1990s chose to surrender.
The offensive was launched despite Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Azerbaijanis also apparently did not care that 85 American soldiers were in Armenia. The US and Armenia began a joint military exercise the day before the offensive was launched.
